In Chapter 2 of Crazy Rich Asians, Eleanor is allowed to sit on Carol’s Qing dynasty Huanghuali bed during their bible study meeting. The Qing dynasty ruled from 1644 to 1912, accroding to Wikipedia. Huanghuali means “yellow flowering pear wood” and is a fragrant, rare wood that was highly coveted for furniture. The Qing royal families once commissioned furniture in the Huanghuali wood, however it is now forbidden to use the almost extinct wood in furniture making.

In 2012, a Huanghuali bed was priced at $4.6 million. There are several items made from Huanghuali wood listed on ebay at the time of this writing. Invaluable.com has several lots of Huanghuali furniture listed for sale as well.

Carol’s husband enters the room, and is depicted on smoking a Cohiba cigar and drinking Hennessy Cognac.

The Cohiba tobacco is known as some of the finest in Cuba. Hennessy makes over 40% of the worlds cognac and is located in France.
