In chapter 1 of Crazy Rich Asians, Rachel and Nicholas plan a trip to Singapore. They meet in a tea shop in NY, New York, Tea and Sympathy, a super cute English tea shop, with  things like Welsh rarebit and Tweed Kettle Pie on the menu. If you are missing your afternoon tea and scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam, this is the place to be in New York.

When Nick and Rachel are discussing their trip to Singapore, they are overheard in the tea shop. News and rumors quickly spread through acquaintances, friends and family. Included in this section are the following:

umbrella at swim clubPulau Club – Singapore Island Country Club – From what I could find on the internet, the Pulau Club seems to be the Singapore Island Country Club. This is an exclusive golf club in Singapore, dating back to 1905, whose offerings include tennis, squash, bowling, swimming, billiards, dining and social activities. The entrance fees range from $30,000 to $100,000.

Oxford UniversityOxford University – It was mentioned that Nick attended Oxford, a well known university in England. Attendees of Oxford include many, many well known world rulers and intellectuals such as Margaret Thatcher, Bill Clinton, J.R.R. Tolkien and Stephen Hawking, just to name a very few.

Hutchison Whampoa is an investment holding company with 2014 revenue of over $54 billion.

Liang Finance Group – I am not sure if there is a Liang Finance Group, but Liang Wengen was, in 2011, listed as the richest man in China, with a net worth of $8 billion, according to Wikipedia.

Royal Mansour in Marrakech – Now on to the most luxurious spot mentioned in Chapter 1. One of the rumor mongers passing on the info. was staying at this luxury hotel in Morocco. According to TripAdvisor, rooms in this gorgeous hotel range from about $1000 to $3000 per night. That sounds like a bargain,  given how gorgeous it is.
